The most recent poverty report from the Maine Center for Economic Policy shows that in 2023, Maine’s child poverty rate, 12.6%, remained “historically low.” Advocates at the press conference said they hope to see this trend continue.
Garrett Martin, president of MECEP, explained, “A child under the age of 6 in an under-resourced household who has a modest bump in income ultimately sees their lifetime earnings potential increase by 17%.”
