Advocates worried about racial disparities in Maine’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout

With limited supplies, the state has prioritized Mainers who are 70 and older because of their risk of severe illness and death from the virus.

It is a decision that Maine Center for Economic Policy analyst James Myall said has led to only 1% of Black Mainers having access to the vaccine.

“By prioritizing age, it is inadvertently excluding a lot of people of color and Black folks especially in the state,” Myall said.
