Report: Maine teachers spend hundreds of dollars of own money on classroom supplies

Individuals teachers in Maine spend an average of $356 out of their own pockets on school supplies. While this amount is about a hundred dollars less than the national average, teachers in Maine are still spending millions of dollars collectively — almost $4.2 million in 2016, according to the Maine Center for Economic Policy — so their students have access to basic tools and materials, including notebooks and pencils.
