“The overriding concerns for conference negotiators should be affordability, affordability, and affordability,” said Dan Coyne, Fiscal Policy Analyst. “Congress must make sure that any meaningful health care reform is affordable for small businesses, which are the backbone of the Maine economy, and for low, moderate, and middle income earning families. At the same time, MECEP recognizes that affordability can only be sustained by adopting key provisions from both House and Senate bills that focus on containing costs over the long-term and give states the flexibility and support they need to make this happen.”
The Senate and House of Representatives will appoint conferees to negotiate a compromise between the separate bills that each chamber passed.
